What a gutter clean includes
A gutter clean clears the leaves, sludge and seed pods from every run by hand, bags the debris rather than washing it onto the garden, and flushes each downpipe so water runs straight through. On inner-north streets the load is mostly jacaranda, mango, poinciana and palm fronds, and it builds fastest under overhanging trees.
While they’re up there, the roofer can tell you what they saw: rust in the gutter bottom, joints that leak, runs that hold water, or roof screws, tiles or flashings that need attention. Ask for photos.
Highset and two-storey houses
Highset Queenslanders and two-storey homes take longer ladders, harness work and more time, which is why they cost more to clean. Box gutters and verandah gutters add to the job, so mention them in the request.
Fibro (asbestos cement) roofs
On a fibro roof, ask for the gutters to be cleaned from a ladder, without walking on or washing the roof. The Queensland Government says asbestos cement roofs “must not be cleaned using a water blaster”, and homeowners “can be fined up to $10,000”.

Gutter guard in Brisbane: mesh types and costs
Gutter guard is a mesh fixed over the gutter, and usually under the first row of tiles or the edge of the roof sheets, so leaves sit on top and blow off instead of filling the gutter. Aluminium and steel mesh are both used on metal and tile roofs. It’s worth fitting when the gutters are clean and sound, or at the same time as new gutters.
Gutter guard doesn’t make gutters maintenance-free: fine debris still gets through and leaves can sit on the mesh. hipages lists an extra charge for cleaning where guards are fitted.

When to clean gutters in Brisbane
Before the storms. Brisbane City Council’s severe weather guide says “Before the summer storm season begins, trim tree branches well clear of your house”, and to “check and clear your gutters and downpipes”. The QBCC’s storm checklist says the same: “trim trees, clear gutters and downpipes”.
After the jacaranda and leaf drop is the other useful time. If gutters overflow in rain even when they’re clean, the problem is the gutter’s fall, outlets or downpipes, not leaves; that’s a repair, covered on the gutters page.
When a gutter clean turns up repairs
Rusted, sagging or leaking gutters are a gutter repair or replacement, and a cracked tile or lifted flashing is a roof repair. Those are building work: the QBCC says a contractor licence is needed for building work “valued over $3,300”, in a class that covers the job.

A national cost-guide site gives $100 (low), $260 (typical) and $400 (high) for a single-storey Brisbane home, and $180, $380 and $600 for a double-storey home, including GST.
How often should gutters be cleaned?
At least before each summer storm season, as Brisbane City Council advises. Houses under jacarandas, mangoes or palms often need a second clean after the leaf and flower drop.
Is gutter guard worth it?
It cuts down how often gutters fill, especially under overhanging trees, but it still needs checking and an occasional clean. Get it priced at the same visit as a clean, or with new gutters.
Can I clean the gutters myself?
We’d rather you didn’t on a highset or two-storey house. If you do it on a single-storey house, have someone foot the ladder, and never walk on a fibro roof.
Do downpipes get cleared too?
They should be. Ask for each downpipe to be flushed and checked, because a blocked downpipe makes the gutter overflow even after it has been cleaned.
